Top 5 Submarine movies

Dive the boat! This is top 5 submarine movies

Number 5: U-571 (2000)

Despite lacking heavily in terms of historical accuracy, this WWII submarine thriller starring Matthew McConaughey and Harvey Keitel still delivers exciting and heart pounding action. Following an Allied submarine crew forced to use a German U-boat to survive.

Good performances from the cast, some demerit points for wasting Jon Bon Jovi who dies like 20 minutes after he's introduced. Plenty of gunfights and torpedo firing action.

Highlight is easily the Sub vs Destroyer battle at the end, director Jonathan Mostow knows how to stage this sequence and the depth charge attack is extremely chilling

Number 4: Hunter Killer (2018)

I don't know critics savaged this one so badly, I thought this movie was fantastic. I felt like I was watching an old school 90s Cold War thriller. The CGI is dated but the movie makes for it with good pacing and performances. Gary Oldman's role may just be yelling at computer monitors, but he's a blast on screen. If you're gonna get an actor do that, go with someone awesome like Oldman

Gerald Butler was a ton of fun in this film as well, I really enjoyed his performance. There was something badass about the way he says "We're gonna run straight at em"

So yeah, whilst it may not have the most mind blowing effects and story, Hunter Killer makes up for it with good characters and acting, a steady pace and a kick-ass soundtrack.

Number 3: The Hunley (1999)
Now this is an underrated film for two reasons
1) Armand Assante's AWESOME performance
2) An untold story of a submarine in the American Civil War

I give mad props to a historical movie that can put you on the edge of your seat, even though you know what's going to happen.

The way the film the Hunley scenes is just so damn claustrophobic and nerve wracking to watch, I really applaud the set designers of this film.
Assante is great as the submarine's captain and Donald Sutherland is also very good as his officer in command

This movie can be hard to find, but it's worth it. It's an incredibly good film

Number 2: Phantom (2013)
A very overlooked film starring Ed Harris as a submarine captain whose ship comes under siege by a crazed David Duchovny who is testing a new weapon that could start a war between the United States and China.

Only real sin with this movie is Harris and Duchovny are supposed to be playing Russians, but they speak in their natural accents and it just doesn't sound. I forgot they were supposed to be Russian at one point.

This is more of a movie about fighting going on within the submarine, but it has a great premise and the tension slowly rises over the course of the film. It's a good one!

Number 1: Das Boot (1981)
Das Boot is not just the best submarine movie, it's one of the best movies ever period.

Wolfgang Petersen gave us one of the most intense and gripping WWII movies ever made. It will be a long film for some and I would recommend watching the mini series version of the film.

There are just to many great moments to name and I would be spoiling if I mentioned them

If you haven't seen this film, I would most certainly recommend giving it a watch. It's an amazing film
